Yobe woman stabs husband to death over food, household stipends

The Yobe State Police Command has arrested a 22-year-old woman, Zainab Isa, for allegedly stabbing her husband over food and household stipends.

According to the police Command, the incident occurred on June 25, 2024 in Damaturu, the state capital.

Confirming the alleged murder, yesterday (Thursday), in Damaturu, the Police Commissioner, Garba Ahmed disclosed: “The 22-year-old suspect was taken to the Crime Investigation Department (CID) for allegedly killing her husband, Ibrahim Yahaya over household stipends and food.”

The Police boss noted that Zainab’s arrest was to conduct a thorough investigation with subsequent legal proceedings in a court of law.

Besides the arrest, Ahmed added: “She admitted to the crime, claiming it was an act of self-defense during a physical altercation initiated by her husband.

“Zainab also highlighted the story of violence in their marriage, even after the births of their children, due to financial and food-related disputes.”

The CP, therefore, expressed sorrow over the tragic incident between the couple that led to the untimely death of a promising young man due to an abusive marital relationship.

He noted that the arrest of Zainab followed a neighbor’s report of the fight between the couple residing in Abbari ward to the police.

Ahmed said that Zainab used a knife to fatally wound her spouse in the chest before the arrival of the police,.

The police chief urged couples to seek help from authorities or the Sharia and family courts, instead of resorting to violence in resolving marital issues.

He also warned community leaders to handle marital conflicts, by considering the country’s economic challenges.

“Community and religious leaders should prevent marital issues from escalating into criminal activities like homicide,” he counselled.
