Over 400 suspected angry political thugs disrupted the Yobe north senatorial campaign rally of the All Progressives Party (APC) in Gashua, the Council headquarters of Bade.
The violence commenced by noon of Saturday, when the Senate President, Ahmed Lawan was handing over the microphone at the podium to Governor Mai Mala Buni, chanting slogans in Hausa: “bwamayi, bamuso,” meaning, we don’t want your representation here in the senatorial district.
The slogans of dislike to be represented in the Yobe north senatorial district, followed with pelting of stones from various directions at the podium, where the dignitaries were standing along with Buni, his deputy and Sen. Lawan.
Security operatives at the rally, immediately whisked away the Governor and other personalities at the podium for safety.
The senatorial campaign rally, was however halted to prevent further protest from the angry youths and some women.
Some of the youths after pelting the podium, said that; “We are protecting our rights, so that the electorates can seamlessly vote for the right senatorial candidate, instead of Sen. Lawan.”
The thugs were said to be apparently reacting to the Supreme Court’s ruling on the validation of Sen. Lawan’s candidature to contest the Yobe north senatorial elections on the platform of APC.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), recently confirmed Alhaji Sheriff Machina, as the authentic candidate of APC to contest the February 25, 2023 National Assembly election in the state.
Other dignitaries that attended the halted campaign rally included the Deputy Governor, Ali Barde Gubana, members of the State Executive Council (SEC), 2023 APC campaign council and party Chieftains.
