The United Nations Fund for Population Activities (UNFPA) has said that youths are critical stakeholders in achieving global peace.
According to the UN agency, the youths are the real engine of renovation in the process of achieving peace among the comity of nations.
UNFPA Country Representative, Ms. Ulla Mueller, stated, yesterday (Monday), to mark World Peace Day in Abuja.
According to her, the young people matter, as they are the engine for renovation to achieve global peace.
Mueller, represented by Macauley Christian, the UNFPA Humanitarian Coordinator, disclosed that; “Youths are indispensable in the promotion of peace and nation-building,”
He noted that when there is no peace or justice, sexual and gender-based violence {SGBV) is heightened with devastating effects on victims.
He also reiterated the importance of the youths in peace promotion with amplified advocacy against SGBV.
Mr. Dino Corell, Employment and Migration Officer, The International Labour Organisation (ILO), Employment and Migration Officer, Dino Corell, urged the youths to always promote peace in society.
“This is essential for socio-economic development to take place,” he said.
He warned that peace would be a mirage if the youths were not engaged in the conversation on how to achieve it.
Responding, a member of the Nigerian Youth Parliament, Marwan Gwamba, expressed the commitment of Nigerian youths to peace and development.
“We’ll continue to propagate the message of peace and justice for a prosperous nation,” he said.
He, therefore, commended the UN for the opportunity and affirmed the willingness of Nigerian youths to give peace a chance through actions and advocacy.
The World Peace Day is marked on September 21 of every year to strengthen the ideals of peace by observing 24 hours of non-violence and cease-fire in conflict areas.
