The North East Development Commission (NEDC) has donated 70. 000 bags of food items and relief materials to State’s Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) in Borno State.
The relief materials support; was to facilitate the return of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) to their ancestral homes across the state.
Presenting the food items on Saturday, in Maiduguri, the Managing Director of the Commission, Mohammed Alkali, disclosed that the donated relief materials are for immediate distribution to the vulnerable IDPs in camps and host communities.
“Today we are donating 10,000 bags each of rice and maize grits, 40, 000 cartons of spaghetti and 4, 000 each of blankets and mats,” he said, adding that the resettlement exercises are to be implemented through an inter-agency approach to dignify the returnees.
Besides, he noted that the return of displaced persons complies with the Kampala Convention in a secured way.
Responding, the Director General of SEMA, Yabawa Kolo said that the food items will support the state government resettle the IDP returnees into communities.
She noted that the cooking oil and other condiments will enable women cook nutritious food to people who were in captivity and camps for over a decade.
According to her, this will aid the healing process of being traumatized, while in captivity and IDP camps.
