The United States has yesterday pledged to support the Nigerian Army
in the fight against Boko Haram insurgency to combat terrorism and
violence in the North-East sub-region of the country.
The pledge was made on Tuesday; by a delegation of United States
Congress, led by Senator Christopher Coons to the Theatre Commander,
Operation Lafiya Dole, Maj-Gen Ibrahim Attahiru at Maimalari
Cantonment, Maiduguri.
He said that the U.S supported the hard work of the Nigerian military
in combating terrorism that had claimed many lives and property in the
Northeast.
His words: “I was pleased to have a delegation of six members of
United States Congress; three senators and three house members to come
and hear today (yesterday) about the hard work of Nigerian military
here in Borno state and Northeastern Nigeria.
“I’m grateful for the brief provided by a Major General and his staff
and for the chance to discuss the path forward.
“We are also here in the country to see both the response to the
humanitarian crisis in Northeast Nigeria and the hard work it is being
done to combat terrorism.”
Responding, Attahiru said that visit of the U.S Congress to the
Theatre Command, was to essentially outline the healthy relationship
existing between the two countries.
“They came here and listened to our needs for assistance and promised
that the delegation of congress, are going to address them.
“It goes a long way to tell you how the U.S is also extending its
hands in the counter-insurgency efforts in Nigeria.”
