The Nigerian Army has said that the fundamental human rights of people
will be “protected, ensured and sustained” in the ongoing military
Operation Lafiya Dole to end Boko Haram insurgency in the North-East
sub-region of the country.
The protection of human rights was announced on Tuesday by Maj-Gen
Nuhu Angbazo, the Chief of Civil/Military Affairs at a Human Rights
Sensitisation workshop in Maimalari Cantonment, Maiduguri.
He said the human rights sensitsation workshop; will enhance
civil/military relationship, as troops continue with military
operations to end Boko Haram insurgency and terrorism in the
Northeast.
The sensitization workshops have also been carried out in 81, 2, 6,
and 82 Divisions of the Nigerian Army in the south and central parts
of the country.
His words: “We are now moving to the 7 Division of Nigerian Army,
which you’re covering for the first time; to protect people’s human
rights, while the military operations are ongoing in the Theatre of
war.
“We also intend to go down to the Brigades to continue with awareness
and interactive sessions. It is supposed to be able to discuss with
our officers and troops and let them know the global best practices in
our operations.”
He said the vision of the Chief of Army Staff, Lt-Gen Tukur Buratai,
is to have a professional responsible Army in the discharge of its
constitutional roles.
“It is very important that we ensure that in every aspect of our
military operations; we make sure it is done using operational means
of best practices,” he noted.
He said the military has a constitutional role to defend the
territorial integrity of the nation.
Speaking on military-civilian relationship, Angbazo said: “This was
why the Civil Military Relations Department was established by the
military.
“The human rights desk of the military was to ensure a cordial
civilian/military relationship in fighting Boko Haram insurgency in
the Northeast.
“The media is also to support and pray for us; and even when we did
something wrong, make sure you are able to criticize us.”
