AT SAUDI SUMMIT, PRESIDENT TINUBU DEMANDS END TO ISRAELI AGGRESSION IN GAZA, WANTS VISION OF TWO-STATE SOLUTION ACTUALIZED

STATE HOUSE PRESS RELEASE

AT SAUDI SUMMIT, PRESIDENT TINUBU DEMANDS END TO ISRAELI AGGRESSION IN GAZA, WANTS VISION OF TWO-STATE SOLUTION ACTUALIZED

President Bola Tinubu on Monday in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia called for an end to Israeli aggression in Gaza, warning that

“the conflict in Palestine has persisted for far too long, inflicting immeasurable suffering.”

Addressing the extraordinary Arab-Islamic Summit, convened to address the current situation in the Middle East, President Tinubu expressed deep concern on the humanitarian conditions in Gaza.

The one-day summit was a follow-up to the Riyadh summit last year, and was attended by Heads of State and Government of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) and the League of Arab States.

Reiterating Nigeria’s call for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, President Tinubu affirmed the countrys support for a two-state solution, where both Israeli and Palestinians can co-exist in security and dignity.

He noted that this solution remained a viable part to lasting peace in the region.

”The conflict in Palestine has persisted for far too long, inflicting immeasurable suffering on countless lives.

”As representatives of nations that value justice, dignity, and the sanctity of human life, we have a moral obligation to collectively bring about an immediate end to this conflict.

”It is not enough to issue empty condemnations. The world must work towards an end to Israeli aggression in Gaza, which has persisted for far too long.

“No political aim, no military strategy, and no security concern should come at the expense of so many innocent lives,” he said.

The Nigerian leader called on parties in the conflict in the Middle East to respect the principles of proportionality and the basic rights of civilians, consistent with global legal and diplomatic frameworks.

”In a rules-based international order, States have the right of self-defence. But self defence must take proportionality into account, in line with global legal, diplomatic – and moral – frameworks.

”An entire civilian population, their dreams and futures, cannot be dismissed as collateral,” he said.

Explaining Nigeria’s principled and consistent stance on the two-state solution, President Tinubu noted that it stands as a beacon of hope, representing the rights of both Israelis and Palestinians to self-determination and peace.

”It is not just a diplomatic article of faith; it is a vision grounded in the principles of equality and mutual recognition.

”Achieving this vision requires a commitment to dialogue and respect for history. We all know this conflict did not begin on October 7 in 2023. It can only be resolved through principled compromise, based on appreciation of the proper context.

”This conflict, in the cradle of history, is so visceral that the ripples of division spread far and quickly. The corrosive impact of the images of endless violence, repeated on a billion smart phones around the world is huge. We need to find new pathways to peace, without delay,” he said.

The Nigerian leader commended King Salman of Saudi Arabia and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman for convening the summit, describing it as a vital opportunity to renew diplomatic efforts and work toward a sustainable peace.

He assured that Nigeria given its own experiences would continue to support international efforts that advance peace and stability in the Middle East.

”Our own experiences, domestically and regionally, have taught us that identity politics are no substitute for respecting the nuances of diversity,” he said.

According to President Tinubu ”the path to reconciliation may be fraught with challenges, but it is through honest conversation that we can foster understanding.

”The international community has the opportunity to bring to bear new thinking on this most relentless challenge.

”It is our duty to engage in this dialogue with sincerity and resolve, recognising the complexities that each side faces.”

President Tinubu called for the establishment of a secretariat to implement the resolutions of the Summit.

He urged the leaders to mandate a select Heads of Government to canvass support globally and oversee the implementation of the Summit resolutions, providing regular reports to a joint OIC and Arab League leadership until permanent peace is achieved in the Middle East.

In his opening remarks, Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman condemned Israeli actions in Gaza and Lebanon, including the targeting of civilians and the continued violation of the Al-Aqsa mosque.

He also condemned Israeli ban on the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) from delivering relief aid to Palestinians and the displacement of Lebanese people.

He emphasized the importance of preserving Lebanon’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

The Crown Prince highlighted Saudi Arabia’s role in promoting Palestinian statehood based on the 1967 borders, mentioning international recognition and the establishment of a Global Coalition with the  European Union and Norway.

He urged more states to join the Global Coalition.

PRESIDENT TINUBU HONORS OGONI MARTYRS

STATE HOUSE PRESS STATEMENT

PRESIDENT TINUBU HONORS OGONI MARTYRS

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to fostering dialogue, reconciliation, and healing among all ethnic nationalities that make up our great nation.

In a special message commemorating the 2024 Ogoni Martyrs Remembrance Day, President Tinubu stands in solidarity with the National Youth Council of Ogoni People (NYCOP) and all Ogoni citizens to honour those who made the ultimate sacrifice in defence of the Ogoni nations interests.

This years commemoration, themed After Price, Comes Prise,” reflects our collective commitment to acknowledging the pain and the lessons of the past as we aspire for a brighter future.

“We honour their memory by recognising the sacrifices made and pledging to strive for a future characterised by peace, justice, and sustainable development for all communities, particularly those in the Niger Delta,” said President Tinubu.

The President reaffirmed that his administration will actively address historical grievances and work towards building a united and prosperous nation for future generations. This vision will be realised through constructive engagement and mutual respect.

Oil was explored in Ogoniland for many years. The struggles of Ogoni leaders to protect their environment from harmful oil exploration were met with severe repression, culminating in the tragic execution of Ken Saro-Wiwa and eight other leaders in 1995.

“As we remember the Ogoni Martyrs, let us honour their legacy by committing to a future where such injustices are no longer tolerated and where the voices of all Nigerians are heard and respected”, President Tinubu said.

Donald Trump picks Susie Wiles to be chief of staff

President-elect Donald Trump has tapped senior campaign adviser Susie Wiles as White House chief of staff, selecting one of his most trusted political confidants for the job.

Wiles, who amassed outsized influence as one of Trump’s two 2024 campaign managers, will be the first woman to ever hold the title of White House chief of staff. Many have credited the professionalization of the most recent Trump campaign to Wiles’ leadership.

“Susie Wiles just helped me achieve one of the greatest political victories in American history, and was an integral part of both my 2016 and 2020 successful campaigns,” Trump said in a statement. “Susie is tough, smart, innovative, and is universally admired and respected. Susie will continue to work tirelessly to Make America Great Again.”

Trump called it a “well-deserved honor” to have Wiles as the nation’s first female chief of staff to the president.

The position does not require Senate confirmation.

A veteran of Florida politics, Wiles directed Trump’s campaign to victory in the state in 2016. She also helped lead Ron DeSantis’ 2018 campaign for Florida governor, before a falling out that prompted the Florida governor to successfully lobby the 2020 Trump campaign to fire her in 2019. But her departure was brief — Wiles was brought back shortly thereafter to lead his campaign in Florida.

After Trump hit a political low in 2021 — roundly condemned for enabling the Jan. 6 insurrection at the Capitol building and ceding the White House to President Joe Biden, he hired Wiles to help guide his unlikely comeback.

Over the years Wiles — a soft-spoken grandmother but sharp political operator — has gained the trust and respect of Trump and his family, and the loyalty of his other aides. And she has proven she knows how to navigate the former president’s whims and mercurial personality.

In Trump’s third bid for the White House, Wiles succeeded at minimizing infighting, leaking and other types of drama that characterized both of Trump’s previous campaigns and his tenure in the White House.

Chris LaCivita, co-manager of Trump’s campaign, described Wiles as “loyal and honest as the day is long, who conducts herself with a large degree of humility. All characteristics that that define a good leader, a great leader.”

“She never hesitated about talking to him about the tough things, or assembling the right people to talk to him about the right things,” LaCivita added.

Wiles is expected to continue running a tight ship in the White House. That will require her to navigate the competing factions already emerging in current Trump world — with new and famous outside influences like Elon Musk and Robert F. Kennedy Jr. vying for power with other longtime D.C. Republican hands.

As rumors swirled around who Trump might select as chief of staff, aides on the Trump campaign were unanimous that they felt Wiles would be the perfect fit, if she wanted the job. Prominent MAGA voices publicly endorsed her for the job earlier Thursday, including Charlie Kirk of Turning Point USA and Rep. Anna Paulina Luna (R-Fla.).

Trump’s announcement comes after former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy — who was also in the running for the job — said in an interview on CBS that he doesn’t want a job in the Trump administration, preferring to help from the outside. Former Trump White House official Brooke Rollins was also in the running, after running the America First Policy Institute the last couple years.

Historically the first appointee named by the president-elect, the chief of staff is charged with overseeing all policy and day-to-day White House affairs. In his first term, Trump burned through four chiefs of staff — former Republican National Committee Chair Reince Priebus, Gen. John Kelly, former South Carolina Rep. Mick Mulvaney and former North Carolina Rep. Mark Meadows — who bore the brunt of the infighting and turbulence that defined his tenure.

Despite having little experience in the nation’s capital, Wiles will become the White House’s envoy to the sprawling executive branch agencies and to Congress. She has not worked in Washington in decades, since her time in the Reagan administration — at the Labor Department and then as a White House as a scheduler — and on Capitol Hill working for the late Rep. Jack Kemp (R-N.Y).

Wiles decamped Washington for Florida, where she spent years running a public affairs firm, gaining a reputation as a top political consultant in the state. She successfully ran Rick Scott’s longshot bid for governor in 2010, and went on to work for the presidential bids of Jon Huntsman, Jr. and later, Mitt Romney in 2012.

While Wiles is the daughter of famed NFL sportscaster Pat Summerall, she likes to avoid the spotlight herself.

At Trump’s victory speech on Wednesday morning in West Palm Beach, Trump recognized Susie as “Ice Baby” and invited her to make remarks. She declined.
