TIGHT SECURITY IN LASU AS ASUU SECRETARY FACES PANEL

0

By Tayo Joseph Lagos, Nigeria.

Wale Adeyemi- Suenu, Head of Department of History and International Studies and Secretary of Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, LASU, chapter is facing a panel over illegal alteration of students results, amid tight security.

Vice chancellor (LASU)

Scroll Report learnt that operatives from Directorate of State Security were at the university gate to check motorists  and pedestrains entering the campus. The reason is that the panel set up to investigate the allegation of illegal alteration  is sitting today. The security is to forestall any form  violence from either ASUU or students while the panel is sitting.

The panel was set up by the university authority to investigate the allegation that Suenu illegally altered students results at the end of second semester of last year.

A letter was given to Adewale-Suenu last month to appear before the panel within a very short notice. A member of ASUU  told Scroll Report that each time the panel sat, there was heavy presence of security and the proceedings are recorded.

He wondered why Adewale-Suenu case “is like this because a similar allegation was levelled against Adebola Ademeso, also a lecturer and a panel was set up to investigate him since last year up till now nothing has happened. In Ademeso’s case there were no security presence and there were no video recording. This must be an attempt to bring down ASUU.”He said

Scroll Report learnt that Ademeso allegedly altered a student’s results before it was uploaded. But in Adewale-Suenu case it is alleged that he illegally altered the students result after it was uploaded.

When lectures upload students results, and there are issues the students can complain to the Head of Department, HOD, if the complaints are true and genuine. For two days the HOD has the power to make alterations through what is called HOD’s window.

If there are further complaints the issue will be taken to the Dean of Faculty where he too can use the Dean’s window to effect corrections.

Scroll Report learnt that some lecturers use this opportunity to make illegal alterations. In the case of Adeyemi-Suenu, it is alleged that he made the illegal alteration on the result of student that did not complain officially.

The Data Processing Unit was said to have detected the alteration because it was Adeyemi-Suenu’s password that was allegedly used to make the illegal alteration.

All efforts made to talk to Adeyemi-Suenu and Ademeso proved abortive…

GABON AFRICAN CUP OF NATION SEMI-FINALS DRAW

0
By Yemi Babalola Lagos, Nigeria.
The Gabon  2017 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) is at the penultimate stages of semi-finals, where Burkina-Faso would be slugging it out with North African giants Egypt, and West African compatriots Cameroon would take on Ghana respectively. It must be noted that the remaining teams are being managed by foreigners, Hugo Broos manages Cameroon, Hector Cuper manages Egypt; Avram Grant manages Ghana and Paulo Duarte manages Burkina-faso, these are the four coaches still standing as AFCON 2017 move into the semi-finals.

Looking inwards into the camps of the semi-finalists, half of the Burkinabes are playing their Africa Cup of Nations finals, with any of the in their early 20’s merged with some other experienced legs like Patriopa and Bounce making up the balance for the team. Jonathan Pitroipa, named the best player of the AFCON 2013 tournament, and Spanish-based striker Jonathan Zongo were ruled out in the opening week after knee injuries. But the manager Paulo Duarte has confirmed the availability of other players to slug it out with Egypt on Feburary 1, 2017 and the team’s ambition burns brightly as they seek another chance to win their first major title.
In the Egyptian camp, Argentine manager Hector Cuper has expressed his worries over the little recovery time his players have before their match against Burkina Faso on Wednesday. Egypt and Arsenal midfielder Mohamed Elneny will not recover from injury in time to ace Burkina Faso in Wednesday’s Africa Cup of Nations semi-final. The 24-year-old is still nursing a calf problem that kept him out Sunday’s 1-0 quarter-final win over Morocco. Egypt will face Burkina Faso in their semi-final in Libreville on Wednesday and they are likely to be without striker Marwan Mohsen for that game according to the manager. Egypt are just emerging from seven years away without participating in the finals and were fortunate to win Sunday’s quarter-final over Morocco.
While, in the camp of Cameroon, the players did not show up on Monday 30, January 2017 for training over bonus rows with the government of Cameroon. The team managed by Hugo Broos are asking for their qualification bonus and semi finals in the tune of 12 million Central African Francs per player. The players have demanded that the government meet their demands by paying the full amount before they can go back to training to prepare for semi-finals in Franceville on Thursday against Ghana. The odds are however stacked against Cameroon who have only managed one win against Ghana in their past seven meetings, drawn thrice and lost thrice. Though the Cameroonians would have had one more day rest than their Ghanaian counterparts coming into their next fixture.

As for the Ghanaians, it has been confirmed that the Black Stars have arrived the town of Bongoville which houses their base camp situated near Franceville on Monday 30, 2017 ahead of their semifinal clash with Cameroon. The team is hoping that their injured Captain Asamoah Gyan who picked up a knock in Ghana’s loss to Egypt in Port Gentil, would be fit before Thursday when they take on Cameroon. Other players have been training under the supervision of their manager Avram Grant. Ghana’s Avram Grant says his team deserve respect following criticism by some fans and sections of the media. Grant’s side are in the semi-finals of the Africa Cup of Nations but that has not stopped some Ghanaians expressing dissatisfaction with the performances. Hopefully, the Ayew brothers-Jordan and Andre who have raised their level in Gabon and have provided comfort to coach Avram Grant would continue their fine form.

In conclusion, it should be noted that of the semi-finalists, Egypt are seven times champions of the African Cup of Nations (AFCON), Cameroon and Ghana, are both four-time African champions, and Burkina Faso would be hoping to make it to the finals and win their first AFCON title.

By Tayo Joseph Lagos, Nigeria.

The police in Ondo state dispersed clashing law makers this morning in Ondo state. The clash which almost got out of hand would have led to distruption of peace in the state but the police quickly intervened to bring the situation under control by dispersing them.

The House of Assembly which ordinarily should be a place for lawmakers to meet and make laws to move the state forward was turned to a battlefield. It was free for all fight as a group of lawmakers interrupted the meeting that was going on by the faction supporting the suspended speaker Jumoke Akindele.

The two factions threw caution to the winds as they clash over the insistence of those opposed to Akindele, that the speaker had been suspended. How to restore peace to the House of Assembly is a major task before the police as the two factions are said to be aggrieved.

President Muhammadu Buhari,  President of Nigeria is alive. That is what the picture below showing Buhari and his wife Aisha seem to be saying.

The wife of the President Aisha Buhari and President Muhammadu Buhari

The picture shows Aisha standing by her husband. The President no doubt needs the support of his wife at times like this, to dispel the speculations that he is dead.

Sources said the President is likely to return to Nigeria this week. Many Nigerians are anxiously waiting to have him back home.

If Buhari returns, those who had speculated that he was dead will be proven wrong. But if he does not return, then waiting for Mr President will continue.

SERENA WILLIAMS SECURED HER 23RD MAJOR TITLE IN THE FINAL AGAINST HER SISTER VENUS

0

Taiwo Olatunji.

Serena Williams’ 23rd major title, catapulting her beyond Steffi Graf as the most decorated champion of the Open era, can be depicted either as a stirring affirmation or a chilling warning.

It is easy enough to subscribe to the first school of thought, given the serenity with which she swept aside sister Venus for a 6-4, 6-4 victory and a seventh Australian Open title, itself another record in a career creaking under the weight of its own history.

What tennis struggles to accept, though, is the counter-argument that Serena’s sustained pre-eminence casts her would-be rivals in a deeply unflattering light. For all that the sport bathed in a soothing all-our-yesterdays feel at Melbourne Park, as Venus and Serena met in a Grand Slam final 16 years after their first, it needed also to come to terms with the pitiful lack of depth among the chasing pack.

The reality is that Serena, at the age of 35 – Graf, let it be noted, retired at 30 – has won her latest major without dropping a single set and despite playing nowhere close to her best. Just listen to the verdict of her coach, Patrick Mouratoglou. “She played well enough to win, but she can play much better,” said the Frenchman, doing little to enthuse about a match where, yet again, sport’s most celebrated sister act seldom caught light.

In nine major finals between this pair, only two have gone to a third set. The love and respect that Venus and Serena never tire of expressing for one another equates on court to an inescapable lack of intensity, to a feeling that, even after 28 meetings on tour, they have never quite become used to facing across the net for such heightened stakes.

Venus and serena

The sisters had kind words to say about each other after the match.

It was different when they were little girls on the rutted public courts of Compton, Los Angeles, where one-upmanship could prevail, but few of their encounters with a championship on the line have touched the realm of classics. For both of them, this was a familiar replay of treasured memories but seldom a compelling contest, as Serena made a decisive break late in the first set and never took another backward step.

Today, only Australia’s Margaret Court stands ahead of her in the compendium of all-time greatness, with 24 titles to her 23, but it is largely an incidental detail. Court belonged to an amateur era when the main draw comprised 16 players, not 128, and when she could juggle the stresses of the tennis circuit with the demands of being a mother-of-four. Already, Serena stands alone.
