How Onyeka Onwenu Died In Lagos

Legendary Nigerian singer and actress, Onyeka Onwenu, is dead. She died at the age of 72.

Ms Onwenu died on Tuesday night at the Reddington Hospital in Lagos after slumping at the birthday party of Mrs Stella Okoli.

An eyewitness said, “It is very sad. Onyeka Onwenu just performed at the birthday of Mrs. Stella Okoli today (Tuesday, July 30, 2024), and after performing, she slumped.

“She was taken to Reddington Hospital and she couldn’t make it.”

However, the deceased’s family has yet to announce her death as of press time.

Onwenu will be remembered for her music albums such as In The Mor Light and Dancing In The Sun.

She also featured in the Half of a Yellow Sun and Lions Heart, among others.

Many prominent Nigerians have mourned her sudden demise. A former President of Aka Ikenga, an Igbo socio-cultural group, Chief Goddy Uwazurike, recalled her last post yesterday on an elite WhatsApp platform called Credibility Group.

He said, “Her last post here was at 5.06pm. Hours later, according to Arise TV early morning News today, Onyeka Onwenu, our lady of songs, our shinning star, our indefatigable nwinye nnaya, slumped at the Stella Okoli birthday party! She was rushed to Reddington Hospital where she died!
What a morning downer!
Say it not in Igboland!
Say it not in this country!
Say it not in the world that Onyeka Onwenu is no more with us!
No longer is Onyeka Onwenu dancing in the sun!
Nwanne m ebezina na Chukwu no nso
This is one death too many!”
