Gunmen shot a police officer and freed seven inmates during an assault on the Okigwe Correctional Farm Settlement.
The incident occurred on Monday at the Correctional Service Farm Settlements, Umualomoke in Okigwe.
Reports indicate that the assailants also kidnapped the correctional service officer overseeing the settlement shortly before targeting the residence of Senator Patrick Ndubeze. Commissioner of Police Danjuma Aboki, who inspected the scene, pledged to spare no effort in ensuring the safe rescue of the abducted correctional service officer.
Additionally, the Commissioner of Police issued immediate orders for the deployment of the Command’s Special Tactical Squad to track down the suspected operatives of IPOB/ESN.
A statement released by the Command’s spokesperson, Henry Okoye, implicated IPOB/ESN, alleging their involvement in the attacks on Correctional Service Farm Settlements, Umualomoke, and the residence of District Senator Patrick Ndubeze in Okigwe on February 12, 2024. These attacks resulted in the release of seven inmates and the abduction of the officer in charge of the farm settlement, as well as the death of a Police Inspector.
Furthermore, the statement highlighted the CP’s directive for the special tactical squad operatives to escalate efforts in ensuring the safe rescue of the officer in charge of the farm settlement and the capture of the fleeing inmates, who will then be brought to justice.
