Federal Govt Not Sure Of Crime To Charge Emefiele With – Akpabio

Date:

Senate President Godswill Akpabio expressed dismay over the state of the nation’s economy under the former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Godwin Emefiele, stating that it has led to current hardships. Akpabio highlighted that various policies and decisions made by Emefiele during his tenure contributed to widespread hunger.

Speaking at a thanksgiving service hosted by Senator Barinada Mpigi in Koroma, Tai Local Government Area of Rivers State, Akpabio acknowledged the challenges faced by Nigerians but assured them that President Bola Tinubu is capable of addressing the economic issues, having willingly taken on the responsibility.

Akpabio urged Nigerians to exercise patience with Tinubu, emphasizing that the deep-rooted economic challenges accumulated over decades cannot be resolved overnight. He described the economic situation inherited by the current administration as dire, mentioning the difficulties in identifying appropriate charges against Emefiele, including possible offenses related to fiscal mismanagement and unauthorized printing of currency.

Regarding Emefiele, who faced allegations of financial misconduct following his removal from office in June 2023, the federal government escalated the charges against him to include counts of criminal breach of trust, forgery, conspiracy to commit forgery, procurement fraud, and conspiracy to commit a felony.
