The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Community Court of Justice sitting in Abuja, on Tuesday, ordered the government of Benin Republic to pay Yoruba nation activist, Chief Sunday Adeyemo, aka Sunday Igboho, the sum of 20 million CFA for unlawful detention and violation of his fundamental human rights.
Igboho was arrested in Cotonou, Benin Republic while trying to board a flight to Germany in 2021.
This was after he eloped from Nigeria after he was declared wanted by the Department of State Services (DSS), following a raid on his Ibadan residence by operatives of the secret police.
After his arrest and detention in Benin Republic, Igboho instituted a suit at the ECOWAS Community Court of Justice to enforce his fundamental human rights.

Monteiro Goncalves, the ECOWAS court ordered the Francophone country to pay 20 million CFA to Igboho within three months and report back to the court with evidence of payment.
Barristers Tosin Ojaomo, Aderemilekun Omojola Esq. and Dr Janet Fashakin Esq. represented Igboho while Irene Aclombessi represented Benin Republic.
