WHO, Borno Target 5OO,OOO Residents For Vaccination Against Yellow Fever

The Borno State government in partnership with the Health World Organisation. WHO, and other partners have targeted the vaccination of about 500,000 residents against yellow fever in the state.

The targeted residents are between the ages of nine months and forty four years and living in Maiduguri Metropolitan Council, MMC, Jere and Ngala, a border community with Cameroon.

Unveiling the vaccination exercise, over the weekend, in Maiduguri, the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Health and Human Services, Dr. Mohammed Ghuluze, disclosed: “The fight against Yellow Fever among the residents; through massive vaccination had commenced from second week of July to July 23, 2023.”

He noted that immunization against the fever will play a significant role in improving the healthcare delivery service for the wellbeing of people in communities.

Continued; “The integrated Yellow Fever preventive mass vaccination was to cover three Local Government Areas, including Ngala, a border community with Cameroon.

Executive Director, State Primary Healthcare Development Agency, Prof. Mohammed Arab, explained that a two-week vaccination campaign is to take place at all health facilities, including temporary posts at strategic locations within the communities.

“The vaccination exercise was to provide preventive measures against yellow fever disease in the state,” he said.

In his remarks, the WHO State Coordinator, Dr. Ibrahim Salisu, said: “The UN health Agency has been supporting the State government by strengthening routine immunization services to the vulnerable population in the targeted communities.

“WHO and the SPHCDA have provided the required resources and jointly conducted some pre-implementation activities, including training of State and LGA teams.”

He said the health teams are to distribute the vaccines and other commodities with community engagement in the targeted councils.

He, therefore, urged them to work closely with Government officials and stakeholders to monitor and supervise in providing the necessary support to ensure that the campaign becomes a success.
