Jutha Gupah, Maiduguri
June 6, 2023.
Governor Babagana Zulum of Borno state, has ordered the re-opening of closed roads in Maiduguri metropolis.
According to him, closure of portions of the Maiduguri-Damaturu road is causing several auto crashes near the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) base.
Zulum gave the order, yesterday (Tuesday), in Maiduguri, when he visited the scene of the accident involving a bus and tricycle.
The auto crash also claimed the lives of two passengers with the injuring of four others.
He said that the multiple accidents, was allegedly caused by the closure of the other lane for over seven years by NAF.
The Air Force, however, closed the road, when Boko Haram terrorists were attacking the military in Maiduguri.
But the Governor insisted that the closed roads be re-open for free flow of traffic and pedestrians.
While sympathizing with the victims, the Governor assured that his administration will open the other closed lane of the dual carriage road.
“This is to avert loss of people’s lives in the future,” he said.
Continued; “I believe the time has come to reopen this road. We will liaise with the authorities of NAF) to ensure the road is reopened this week.”
He, therefore, urged the general public to remain calm, as the State government will address closures of roads for safety of motorists and other commuters.
Kyari Kura Damasak, a resident, lamented that since the closure of other road, there were multiple cases of auto crashes with deaths in the last nine years.
Ahmed Adamu, also described the closure of the road, as a death trap that had been claiming people’s lives.
End.
