NEDC DONATES FOOD ITEMS TO 800 SICKLE CELL PATIENTS IN YOBE

The North East Development Commission (NEDC) in collaboration with the Sickle Cell Disease Eradication Initiative (SCDEI), has distributed food items to 800 sickle cell patients in Yobe State.

The distributed food items included bags of rice, sugar and cartons of spaghetti and macroni for the less privileged and care givers in various communities.

While receiving the food items, at the weekend (Sunday), in Damaturu, the Executive Secretary, Primary Healthcare Management Board (PHMB), Dr. Babagana Machina, disclosed that the donation of food items could improve the living conditions of sickle cell patients.

Machina, represented by the Board’s Director, Community and Family Health, Mohammad Ali, urged the patients to go for regular medical checkups.

He noted that his will prevent other complications, arising from the sickle cell disease that affect many children in the state.

SCDEI’s Executive Director, Dr. Aliyu Muhammad, said the food distribution programme tagged: “Relief Package to Sickle Cell Disease Warriors and Caregivers,” will be extended to Potiskum, Geidam, Gashua and Damaturu, the state capital.

He said that in Damaturu alone, 130 registered patients would benefit from the packages donated by the Commission.

Fatima Abdulmumin, a caregiver, also thanked the Commission for the donation and urged other philanthropists and groups to emulate NEDC.
