Army, Police Repell ISWAP Attack On Borno Community

The joint Armed Forces of the Nigerian Army and Police have repelled an attack of the Islamic State West Africa Provinces (ISWAP) terrorists on Jakana community of Kaga Local Council in Borno State.

 

The terrorists attempted to ransack the Jakana police outpost protecting residents of Jakana, 40 kilometres west of Maiduguri, the state capital.

 

A counter-insurgency expert, in the Lake Chad region, Zagazola Makama, disclosed, yesterday (Sunday), in Maiduguri that: “There were six motorcycles in a convoy of terrorists from Jalori through the Markuba axis to attack the Jakana police outpost.”

He stated that the security outpost also provides security to both residents and motorists along the Jakana-Maiduguri Road.

 

According to him, the coordinated attack started at 2.30 am with the mounting of General Purpose Machine Guns (GPMG) targeting the police outpost with sporadic shootings.

 

A military source in Maiduguri, further disclosed that the swift response of the police resulted to a 30-minute heavy gun battle with the troops deployed to protect the community.

 

On how the terrorists were repelled, he said: “An hour later, troops of the 29 Task Force Brigade were dispatched to the scene.

“They assisted the police in fierce repulsion, after they overwhelmed the terrorists, forcing them to flee into the south fringe of Sambisa Forest.”

 

The source said that the troops chased the fleeing terrorists towards their withdrawal routes of forest.

 

Makama, added: “The soldiers also recovered bullet proof vest and two magazines abandoned while fleeing the community in disarray,” stating that there were no casualties recorded in the fierce battle with terrorists.
