Aminu Mohammed, a student of the Federal University, Dutse in Jigawa State, has apologized to the First Lady, Aisha Buhari over a Twitter post deemed defamatory.
The 500-level student of the Department of Environmental Management and Toxicology, tendered his apology after he was released from detention following the First Lady’s decision to withdraw a defamation and cyberstalking case against him.
Mohammed was released on the night of Friday, 2 December, 2022, after the prosecution counsel, Fidelis Ogbobe, told the court that the First Lady had heeded the pleas of well-meaning Nigerians who intervened in the matter.
Mohammed’s tweet read: “I would like to use this medium to express my sincere apologies to those I’ve hurt especially our mother, Aisha Buhari.
“It was never my intention to hurt your feelings and Insha Allah, I will change for the better. However, I’m also grateful for your forgiveness, thank u mama.”
Voiceofnaija.ng had reported that the final year student was arrested on 18 November, by state agents believed to be men of the secret police outfit, SSS.
His arrest was ordered by wife of the President, Aisha Buhari over a tweet where he commented that the first lady had become rotund feeding fat on poor people’s money
The tweet, which was posted on 8 June, reads: “Su mama anchi kudin talkawa ankoshi.”
Mohammad’s tweet, accompanied by a photo of Aisha, loosely translates as “Mama has eaten poor people’s money and is now full”.
He was arraigned before Justice Yusuf Halilu of the Federal Capital Territory High Court in Maitama, where he pleaded not guilty and was remanded at Suleja prison in Niger State.
Aminu was charged with Cybercrime, Cybersquatting, Computer Related Forgery, Conspiracy and Criminal Breach of Trust.
But NANS in a press release on 1 December, decried Mr. Muhammad’s ordeal.
NANS had planned to commence its nationwide demonstration on Monday, 5 December, to demand unconditional release of Mohammad.
