The United Nations Humanitarian Coordinator for Nigeria, Matthias Schmale has yesterday, condemned the killing of a humanitarian staff, Médecins du Monde, by a soldier in Damboa of Borno State.
Schmale, in a statement, yesterday (Friday), in Maiduguri, lamented that; “The killing is disturbing and sad,” stating that he conveyed his heartfelt condolences to the aid worker’s family and other colleagues in the Northeast.
Besides, he wished a speedy recovery to the pilot working with the UN Humanitarian Air Service (UNHAS) in the region.
According to him, the pilot was injured in the deplorable attack by an apparently rogue soldier of the Nigerian Army.
He noted that all humanitarian staff working in the Northeast deserve the fullest respect for their courage and commitment to stay alive, while discharging their respective responsibilities.
“The UN humanitarian staff deliver life-saving assistance to people in need in often difficult and dangerous circumstances,” he said, declaring that the humanitarian workers must be protected at all times to save life.
The humanitarian boss also lauded the Government and military’s efforts to speedily investigate Thursday’s incident.
He, therefore, urged them to ‘strengthen remedial measures’ to prevent similar killings in the future.
