The Yobe state chapter of the Inter Party Advisory Council (IPAC) has urged the State Independent Electoral Commission (YSIEC) to constitute transition councils in 17 Local Government Areas.
According to IPAC, the constitution of the 17 transition councils, has become inevitable before the conduct of 2023 general elections in the country.
While seeking elections into the Councils, yesterday (Monday), in Damaturu, IPAC’s Chairman, Muktar Hassan Gashua, disclosed: “As the tenures of 17 elected council chairmen expire in October, the electoral should conduct elections before the forthcoming general elections.
He said that the electoral commission provided all the political parties a level playing ground for credible, fair and acceptable council elections.
“IPAC is confident that SIEC will improve on the last council elections for transparency and accountability to the people that voted them into office,” he said.
According to him, members of the transition council should be persons with experience in local government administration.
He suggested that members of the transition council should run the Councils for two months until when YSIEC conducts elections.
Besides, he added the State House of Assembly will also support the Executive in ensuring the dividends of democracy at the grassroots level.
