Governor Babagana Zul of Borno state has ordered the demolition of 1, 500 houses in Maiduguri, the state capital. The demolished houses are to be compensated with building of 500 housing unit estate for the affected flood victims. Announcing the demolition exercise, yesterday (Tuesday), in an interview with journalists, Zulum, disclosed: “These submerged houses are to be pull down by the State’s Geographic Information Service (BOGIS).” He lamented that are built on the riverbanks and waterways. He further disclosed that the master plan of Maiduguri metropolis, including Kere Council, is to be reviewed. According to him, the review becomes inevitable mitigating the devastating effects of perennial global flooding.Meanwhile, he directed for temporary measures of de-silting and embarkment of the River and it’s banks. He noted that the measures are protect adjourning houses and the Gambouru Bridge market and the N4.3 billion flyover. He, therefore, warn residents and other property developers against building houses along rivers and waterways.
