Governor Babagana Zulum of Borno state has tasked commissioners on the challenges of service delivery and livelihoods to the people.
According to him, overcoming the challenges will restore the lost glory of Borno as home of peace and commercial hub in West Africa.
Swearing in the 19 commissioners and a Permanent Secretary, yesterday (Monday), at the Musa Secretariat Complex, Maiduguri, the Governor disclosed: “I expect nothing less than loyalty, diligence, probity and accountability from you in our collective efforts to improve people’s livelihoods.
He added that the commissioners’ wealth of experience could restore the lost glory of the state.
Besides, he urged them to continue from where they stopped and ensure peace returns to Borno.
“You’re expected to advise me on technical matters towards making informed decisions on developmental issues,” he said, adding that this could lead to economic growth and development across the state.
Zulum explained that the commissioners are part of history to overcome the challenges ahead by ensuring synergy for a good working relationship with their permanent secretaries.
He said that this will ensure the successful implementation of government policies and programmes.
To prevent apathy among workers, the inaugurated commissioners should engage the workforce in retooling the administrative processes.
According to him, the implementation of reforms in Civil Service could lead to the reduction of Ministries from 19 to 15 this year.
He warned against absenteeism and concentration of government activities in Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) in the hands of top government officials.
“All workers including their permanent secretaries be in their offices from 8am-4pm of working days,” he said.
On the upgrade and rehabilitation of the Secretariat, he said that two canteens and WASH facilities for males and females workers are to be built and equipped to deliver services.
He added that a filling fuel station and library will also be established this year for the civil servants.
“The rehabilitation upgrade of the Secretariat Complex was to make it the best working environment in the country,” he said.
