The Yobe State Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Disaster Management has supported 530 households to rebuild and restore their houses and livelihoods. The households were supported, following the destruction of their houses in five Local Government Areas in last year’s floods. While announcing rebuilt of houses Friday in Damaturu at a ministerial briefing to mark second anniversary of the Buni administration, the Commissioner of Humanitarian Affairs, Dr. Abubakar Garba Iliya disclosed: “We spent over N60.8 million in supporting victims of the rainstorm and vulnerable persons between 2012 and 2020. He said N30 million was spent for the procurement and distribution of building materials to 530 households rebuild their rainstorm-destroyed houses in Damagum, Buni/Yadi, Bara and Babangida towns. “Each of the affected flood victims also received N5, 000 to cushion the effects of their hardships,” he said. He explained that N23 million of the amount was spent on the purchase of distributed food items to vulnerable persons through registered civil society organizations. On livelihoods restoration, he said: “The Ministry also spent N7.8 million to train Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in goat rearing, poultry and tailoring Gujba, Gulani and Damaturu.” He added that the state government in collaboration with the federal government disbursed N20, 000 each to 3,400 rural women. According to him, the UNDP and State Government also supported each of the 1,500 women with N50, 000. He said the starter grants was to restored their livelihoods from the 12-year Boko Haram insurgency in Gulani and Gujba councils He said the beneficiaries are residents of Gujba and Buni/Yadi communities displaced by the insurgents.
