The World Health Organisation (WHO) in collaboration with Yobe State Ministry of Health and Human Services has trained 40 health workers on coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. The training of personnel was to enable them to prevent and control COVID-19 pandemic that has claimed nine lives from 409 confirmed cases in the state. While flagging off training Thursday in Damaturu, WHO’s Emergency Manager in Northeast, Muhammad Shafiq disclosed: “Today’s training was to maintain global promotion, visibility and sustenance of hand hygiene in the healthcare sector.” Shafiq, who was represented by the Public Health Officer, Dr. Ibrahim Salisu said that hand hygiene is one of the important infection prevention and control measures against COVID-19 and acute watery diarrhea. His words: “We are using this opportunity to sensitize the populace and build capacity of the healthcare workers on infection, prevention and control. “I call on every one of you including men, women, children and healthcare givers to always maintain hand hygiene.” According to him, hand hygiene had helped in reducing the spread of covid-19 disease in many communities across the globe. He noted that many people did not know its significance; until the outbreak of COVID-19. He therefore urged residents to imbibe the habit of regular hand washing, stating that; “It reduces a significant percentage of bacterial counts and prevents infection to other people. Some of the trainees also thanked WHO for increasing their capacity buildings to keep abreast on the new means of diagnosing patients in hospitals and health centres.
