ARMY TO COURT MARTIAL RAMPAGING TROOPS IN NORTHEAST

Date:

The Theatre Commander of Operation Lafiya Dole, Maj-Gen. Abba Dikko has said that the military has zero tolerance for acts of mutiny among troops fighting Boko Haram insurgency in the Northeast. Dikko gave the warnings on Saturday afternoon; during a lunch with troops at Military Command and Control Centre, Maiduguri. He condemned the acts of rampaging soldiers at the airport, warning that; “The law and ethics which the Nigerian Army is guided with; would take its full course on errant troops.” He also reminded the soldiers of their oath of recruitment, adding that they voluntarily joined the military for disciplinary measures to be taken against any alleged acts of mutiny. His words: “You’ve decided to put your life on the line for territorial integrity of this nation. It is also important that we are reminded of our roles and responsibilities to Nigeria and its society. “Our responsibility to ourselves has to be guarded; because we are not a conscript army. We are regular military fighting this war against Boko Haram insurgents. “It is the responsibility of the military to deploy you; where it finds you appropriate to conclude this operation in the theatre of war.” He said it is important; troops understand that the service they are rendering, is to their fatherland, Nigeria. He noted that the service they are rendering at the theatre of war; is not to an individual troop or soldier. Continuing he said, “Those of you; who have volunteered to serve, have subsequently offered your service. It is the responsibility of the services to deploy you where they find you appropriate. “So it is important that we continue to retain our professional comportment so that we can serve diligently. It’s important also that we uphold the values and ethics of the system.” Dikko further insisted: “The bedrock of your service as a soldier is discipline. A soldier must remain disciplined at all times. A soldier must obey instructions. On soldiers’ alleged rampage, he said:  “They would be disciplined in accordance with military laws. We don’t punish in the military. We discipline.” Discipline, according to him, is the bedrock of the job in the army. He warned that if there is no discipline, there can’t an army. “We are focused and doing what we are supposed to do in order to finish the assignment that we’re given,” he assured.
