Jutha Gupah, Maiduguri April 17, 2018. The Borno State Police Commissioner, Damian Chukwu has confirmed the arrest of a female suicide bomber near Bakassi camp on Tuesday morning in Maiduguri. The 13-year old suspect, Zara Idriss was sighted by security agents at the eastern flank of Bakassi Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) camp. Announcing the arrest yesterday at a news conference in Maiduguri, Chukwu said four suspected suicide bombers sneaked into Maiduguri in a vehicle and alighted along Damboa road before Zara’s arrest. According to him, Zara was arrested by men of the police Explosives Ordinance Department (EOD) team, on Tuesday at about 6: 50am; while lurking at the perimeter fence of the camp. He said that the policemen condoned off the area, diffused the bomb and apprehended the suspect. The police chief told newsmen that the arrested suspect is in police custody for further interrogations. His words: “On Tuesday this morning at about 6:50am, a female suicide bomber was sighted behind Bakassi IDPs camp along Damboa road. “On sighting the bomber, conventional policemen alongside the EOD team swung into action and cordoned off the area to prevent escape of suspect into metropolis and camp. “The suspect, one Zara Idriss was rendered safe, arrested and is now in our custody.” Chukwu urged members of the public to go about their normal activities without fear. “You should report any suspicious movements in your communities to security agencies for prompt action,” he said. He also assured that the police command is committed to the protection of people’s lives and property.
