Did you know that you can actually clean your jewels with household products? Believe it or not, there are five items you probably have in your home as we speak—and if you too keep the occasional six-pack of beer in your fridge, you’re about to learn how to clean jewelry by putting that beer collection to good use. Yes, you read that correctly. Beer (along with another common hard liquor) is among the easiest ways to clean off tarnished golds, silvers and other common jewelry metals. You might be wondering if these unexpected items are safe to use on your fine jewelry, too, and the answer is yes—club soda does wonders for your diamonds and other precious stones.

Crack open a Corona the next time you want to clean your 14-karat gold! Splash a small amount of beer onto a cloth, then rub it across your gold pieces to remove any tarnish or other dirt. This works best with light or (at most) amber-colored beers—sorry, Yuengling lovers.This is the easiest of our tricks, and possibly the one that works the best on gemstones. For all your diamonds, sapphires, and any other precious gems, pour yourself a glass of club soda, drop your jewelry in, and simply let it sit overnight. The reason it works? Ketchup has extremely high acidity levels that can eat away at caked-on grit. Vodka: it’s not just a great way to wind down after a long day at work anymore.This one’s an old trick that you may actually be familiar with from learning how to care for silverware. If you have any jewelry that’s pure silver, you can soak it in a mixture of 1⁄2 a cup of white vinegar with 2 tablespoons of baking soda for about two to three hours; when you pull it out, it will be like brand new!
