The Borno State Government has yesterday said 26 roads projects have
been completed and abandoned five Maiduguri metropolitan and border
roads projects, because of Boko Haram insurgency and terrorism that
claimed many lives and property in the state.
The 2016 budget performance on roads, bridges and transport projects
in the state has hit 86 per cent, despite insecurity at some projects
sites.

This was disclosed on Monday in Maiduguri, by Commissioner of Works
and Transport, Adamu Lawan to mark state’s council of Nigerian Union
of Journalists (NUJ) Press Week.

He said the roads projects, could have been completed; if not because
of Boko Haram insurgency that led to the abandonment of five major
rural base projects.

The affected roads projects, according to him, include roads the ones
in Maiduguri Metropolis, Jere and Mafa Local Government Areas,
Gombouru-Wulgo, Gambouru/Ngala dual carriage way, Dikwa Township and
Dikwa-Gulumba-Banki roads.

His words: “I am happy to inform you that out of the total number of
new projects initiated, most of them are completed; while others are
ongoing with the abandoning of five; due to insecurity.

“The time you allocated to visit these projects, will allow you to see
all or most of our projects. This will enable you judge government’s
efforts in the provision of infrastructural facilities, despite Boko
Haram insurgency.

Lawan continued: “The Ministry would have achieved at least double the
number of project delivered so far under the Civil Engineering works;
if not because of setback due to the insurgency which led to the
abandonment of five major rural base projects.
He said the abandoned roads projects, are being handled by CGC Nigeria
Ltd and EEC International since 2011.
